Common facultative endosymbionts do not influence sensitivity of cereal aphids to pyrethroids

چکیده

Cereal aphids, including the bird cherry-oat aphid, Rhopalosiphum padi, and grain Sitobion avenae, can transmit viruses that significantly reduce crop yields. To mitigate against yield losses, insecticides are routinely used to manage aphid populations. Aphids form relationships with endosymbionts confer fitness benefits or consequences aphid. Recent artificial inoculation experiments indicate could increase susceptibility insecticides, but this has not been explored using populations naturally infected endosymbionts. Here, we sampled aphids from an important cereal production region in Lower Saxony, Germany. We characterized endosymbiont profile of these conducted pyrethroid dose–response assays test hypothesis facultative insecticides. find level insecticide is highly variable S. avenae identify sensitive tolerant pyrethroids, collected same field. Nine facultative endosymbionts in aphids. A review

Aphids are frequently engaged in mutualistic associations with endosymbionts. Symbionts are bacterial or fungal microorganisms that can be obligate or facultative to aphids. Research showed facultative (or secondary) symbionts have numerous effects on their host aphids such as resistance to heat shock, parasitoids and fungus etc., which may consequently promote a co-evolution between symbionts ...

Parasitoids as vectors of facultative bacterial endosymbionts in aphids.

Heritable bacterial endosymbionts play an important role in aphid ecology. Sequence-based evidence suggests that facultative symbionts such as Hamiltonella defensa or Regiella insecticola also undergo horizontal transmission. Other than through male-to-female transfer during the sexual generation in autumn, the routes by which this occurs remain largely unknown. Here, we tested if parasitoids o...

Facultative bacterial symbionts in aphids confer resistance to parasitic wasps.

Symbiotic relationships between animals and microorganisms are common in nature, yet the factors controlling the abundance and distributions of symbionts are mostly unknown. Aphids have an obligate association with the bacterium Buchnera aphidicola (the primary symbiont) that has been shown to contribute directly to aphid fitness. In addition, aphids sometimes harbor other vertically transmitte...

Dynamics of genome evolution in facultative symbionts of aphids

Aphids are sap-feeding insects that host a range of bacterial endosymbionts including the obligate, nutritional mutualist Buchnera plus several bacteria that are not required for host survival. Among the latter, 'Candidatus Regiella insecticola' and 'Candidatus Hamiltonella defensa' are found in pea aphids and other hosts and have been shown to protect aphids from natural enemies. We have seque...

Could Behaviour and Not Physiological Thermal Tolerance Determine Winter Survival of Aphids in Cereal Fields?

Traits of physiological thermotolerance are commonly measured in the laboratory as predictors of the field success of ectotherms at unfavourable temperatures (e.g. during harsh winters, heatwaves, or under conditions of predicted global warming). Due to being more complicated to measure, behavioural thermoregulation is less commonly studied, although both physiology and behaviour interact to ex...
